Our journey to transform recruitment: The story behind Fill Technology
You know how influencers often start their non-provocative and empty post with ‘People often ask me…’ as a way to just brag about themselves? If you haven't thought about it before, you will now. Anyways, people often ask me how and why Fill came to be, and let’s be honest, if you’re not into me, hiring, and in general, or want to not wanting to change the world for the better, this is not a post for you.
How it began
It all began on a frosty day in Stockholm during the COVID lockdown when I met my co-founders, Fredrik, Faik, and Daniel, while maintaining appropriate social distance. It's almost like a modern fairy tale: Once upon a time, in a land of masks and hand sanitizer...
Our shared frustrations and experiences with the recruitment industry brought us together, and we quickly realized that we had the combined expertise needed to reshape the world of talent acquisition. As a co-founder of Fill, my 15 years of HR experience provided me with a deep understanding of the inefficiencies and wasted resources that traditional recruitment methods often produce. Fredrik, has extensive experience leading and managing consultants in high-stakes environments, offered valuable insights into the complexities of the industry. Faik and Daniel, both long-time entrepreneurs and developers with 20+ years of coding experience, including a decade spent building HR products, supplied the technical expertise needed to create an innovative platform.
United by our shared vision of a transparent, efficient, and fair recruitment market for all parties involved, we embarked on a mission to develop Fill. Our goal was to create a next-generation hiring platform that would transform the way companies and recruiters work together to overcome the talent shortage.
Applying first principle of thinking
First-principles thinking is one of the best ways to reverse-engineer complicated problems and unleash creative possibility. Sometimes called “reasoning from first principles,” the idea is to break down complicated problems into basic elements and then reassemble them from the ground up. It’s one of the best ways to learn to think for yourself, unlock your creative potential, and move from linear to non-linear results.
This approach was used by the philosopher Aristotle and is used now by Elon Musk and Charlie Munger. It allows them to cut through the fog of shoddy reasoning and inadequate analogies to see opportunities that others miss.
Reasoning by first principles removes the impurity of assumptions and conventions. What remains is the essentials. It’s one of the best mental models you can use to improve your thinking because the essentials allow you to see where reasoning by analogy might lead you astray. If we never learn to take something apart, test the assumptions, and reconstruct it, we end up trapped in what other people tell us — trapped in the way things have always been done. When the environment changes, we just continue as if things were the same.First-principles reasoning cuts through dogma and removes the blinders. We can see the world as it is and see what is possible.
When it comes down to it, everything that is not a law of nature is just a shared belief. Money is a shared belief. So is a border. So are bitcoins. The list goes on.
So a lot of you have asked me about what problem we are really solving...well...the biggest challenge in the hiring market is the enormous waste that occurs every day, everywhere, in every hiring process. The inability to leverage insights and work done across different hiring processes is a significant issue. You know what they say, "One person's trash is another person's... job candidate?" No they don't say that. But what it means is that work done in one hiring process, i.e sourcing candidates, interviewing candidates and reviewing test, will in 99% of every case be seen as redundancy. Recruiters and employers can't reuse insights and candidate conversations from previous processes due to a lack of tools, time, and knowledge on how to become more resourceful as a hiring company.
